Looking for an inexpensive way to cool off this summer? Public recreational swimming is available Mondays through Saturdays (except July Fourth) from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Davis and Downey high school pools in Modesto. Davis is at 1200 W. Rumble Road, and Downey is at 1000 Coffee Road. The Downey pool will be closed this Saturday. Admission is $2 for adults, $1 for ages 17 and younger, and $1.25 for seniors 62 and older. Because of maintenance issues, the Johansen High pool is not open this summer. For more information, call the Modesto Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department at (209) 577-5344.


The San Andreas Rumble, a classic-car show and swap meet, will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 19 at the Calaveras Government Center, 891 Mountain Ranch Road. Cars are limited to those from 1976 and older, and space is limited to 100 cars. Admission is free. Preregistration, which closes July 11, is $20 per car and includes guaranteed dash plaque and space, the Record newspaper in Stockton reports. Drive-up entry fee is $30 per car with no guarantee of a plaque or space. Swap meet booth fees are $25 and $35, and food booth fees are $25. The show is sponsored by the San Andreas Merchants Association. The 49ers Lions Club will serve breakfast to all who come early. Trophies will be presented for best of show, best original, best truck, best interior, best paint, best street rod, best Mopar, best Chevy, best Ford and best rat rod.
