50 YEARS AGO: John McConnell, a science teacher at Modesto Union Academy, received an eight-week scholarship to La Sierra College in Riverside from the National Science Foundation Institute. The eight-week course focused on upgrading junior high and high school teachers in general science, including biology, chemistry and physics. McConnell previously had received scholarships for physics and mathematics from the institute.
