A woman died in Ceres as a result of a solo vehicle car accident just after midnight Thursday.

Investigators believe the Ceres woman was driving west on Roeding Road when she lost control of her vehicle, which flipped several times into a dirt field south of Roeding and west of Mitchell Road, police said.

It’s unknown if the woman, identified as 27-year-old Christina Abarca, was wearing a seat belt, but she was ejected from the vehicle.

Officers found Abarca lying in the dirt field unconscious and with major visible injuries. They called for emergency medical personnel and attempted lifesaving efforts, but she died at the scene.

It took several officers to detain an uncooperative, emotionally distraught man at the scene who later was determined to be Abarca’s boyfriend, said Ceres police spokeswoman Carissa Higginbotham. After a brief struggle with officers, he was detained, questioned and later released with no charges filed.

Higginbotham said the boyfriend was not in the car with Abarca at the time of the crash, but she didn’t know how he came to be at the scene.

Traffic officers are still investigating what caused Abarca to lose control of her car and are awaiting toxicology results to determine if drugs or alcohol were a factor.

Abarca was charged for two different incidents last month for driving on a suspended license because of a prior arrest of driving under the influence.

Portions of Mitchell and Roeding were closed until about 6 a.m. Friday while the Ceres Police Department Traffic Unit investigated the collision.
