Info: A bridge workshop for beginners of all ages will get participants playing in six hours. Cost is $20 general, $15 for teachers. Partners will be found for those without. Info: A “Welcome Home and Appreciation Barbecue” for all veterans and their families will be offered by Peter K. Sien, MD, Inc., a 21st Century Oncology affiliate. There will be free food, games, a medical clinic and activities for families. Sien will have a booth for more information about services available for veterans. Where: Carnegie Arts Center, 250 N. Broadway

Info: Bay Area author and journalist Richie Unterberger will give a look into the careers and styles of many of rock ’n’ roll’s guitar masters, including references to the instruments on view in the exhibition “Carnegie Rocks!” Video footage of greats like Les Paul, George Harrison, Keith Richards, Carl Wilson and others will be featured. Unterberger began his career as a DJ at WXPN (88.5 FM) in Philadelphia, moving on to become the editor of Option magazine from 1985-91. He has written music reviews and contributed to a variety of music publications, including Mojo, Record Collector, Rolling Stone and AllMusic, an online database of music biographies and album reviews. “Guitar Legends” is part of the Carnegie’s monthly series of Sunday Arts Lectures. Admission to the lectures is free. Admission to “Carnegie Rocks!” is $12 general, $10 students and seniors, and free for children 12 and under accompanied by an adult.

100 YEARS AGO: It was announced that the new Hotel Modesto was set to be dedicated in mid-June. The Modesto Chamber of Commerce planned a banquet and dance directly after the dedication.
