A bronze statue of a kneeling officer paying respect to those who lost their lives in the line of duty has been installed outside the Modesto Police Department, completing the Fallen Officer Memorial there.
The sculptor is Austin Weishel. The statue’s cost was $25,000, said department spokesman Rick Armendariz, and like the first phase of the memorial, it was paid for through donations from service clubs, department employees, employee associations and others.
The monument honors MPD Officer Leo “Bobby” Volk and Sgt. Steve May. On May 21, 1973, Volk was in pursuit of a fugitive vehicle when a car pulled out in front of him. He swerved to avoid a collision, losing control of the vehicle. He died later at the hospital.
On July 29, 2002, May was assisting other officers in searching for a stolen vehicle. The stolen vehicle suddenly rammed May’s vehicle. He was catastrophically injured and died seven years later, never having regained consciousness.
