A small fire burned about an acre of vegetation on the north bank of the Stanislaus River at the McHenry Avenue Recreation Area on Monday afternoon. The fire was on the San Joaquin County side of the river, so its firefighters extinguished it, but Stanislaus County firefighters were ready on the south side in case the fire jumped the river. Modesto Regional Fire Authority Battalion Chief Randy Anderson said investigators are looking for a man who witnesses said started the fire.
