Donations of snacks, toiletries and other items can make life a little easier for service members stationed overseas.

The American Red Cross will collect them until Friday at numerous locations, including Modesto and Sonora, through its Operation Care Package.

“Sending simple things like snacks, basic toiletry items and even socks to our troops overseas offers critical support and a small touch of home, letting them know they are in our thoughts,” said Kathleen Weis, chief executive officer of the Red Cross Capital Region.

A sampling of suggested items: instant coffee packets, pop-top ravioli cans, deodorant, disposable razors, toothpaste, batteries, bug spray and prepaid phone cards. A full list of what can be donated is at

The donations will be shipped in time for Independence Day. The drop-off locations include:

• Modesto: 1230 Sixth St., 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every day through Friday
• Sonora: 13669 Mono Way, 9 a.m. to noon through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday.
