Pray Modesto, a loosely knit group that enlists Christian congregations and organizations in the Modesto area to pray one week a year on a rotating basis for the community, schools and government, will hold its second annual prayer breakfast from 7 to 8:30 a.m. Thursday at Big Valley Grace Community Church.
“Pray Modesto is a project to cover the city in blessing prayer 52 weeks a year,” said committee member Cheryl Birch. “We are beginning our third year cycle for 2014-15. The prayer breakfast is our kickoff and also a thank you to the past year’s participants.”
About 300 people from nonprofit groups, churches, businesses, education and the government are expected to attend.
“We’re going to pray for our city, for our leaders, for the health and well-being of our city and the citizens in it,” said Marvin Jacobo, CEO of City Ministry Network, which organized Pray Modesto a few years ago. “Christian people, Muslim people, whoever wants to pray is welcome. Most of the time, it will be directed prayer around the table.”
Never miss a local story.
Jacobo said the morning will begin with breakfast, followed by a couple of worship songs and a proclamation from the mayor. Then attendees will be directed to pray for what organizers call the “seven pillars of influence” – family, religion, government, business, arts/entertainment, education and media.
Unlike other prayer breakfasts, there will be no keynote speaker. “We just want to get people to pray instead of having someone pray from the front,” Jacobo said.
Tickets are $10 from Prayer Breakfast, P.O. Box 1302, Salida 95368. For more information, email firstname.lastname@example.org or call (209) 324-9447.
