A 38-year-old woman died Thursday afternoon when one of the tires on her vehicle blew out and her safety belts failed, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The woman from Lompoc, in Southern California, was driving north on Interstate 5 just after 1 p.m. when the right rear tire on her 1999 Ford Explorer popped south of Patterson, said California Highway Patrol Officer Eric Parsons.
The woman was traveling about 70 mph when the blown tire caused her to lose control of the Ford. It veered off the side of the road and hit an embankment, then overturned and came to rest on its side in the slow lane.
Although the woman was wearing her seat belt, she was ejected from the vehicle. Parsons said it appeared her seat belt failed as a result of previous damage.

The woman died at the scene. Her name was not released because her family has not been notified.
