Cafe Shalom, the 44th annual Jewish cultural, music, and arts and crafts festival, will be held Sunday at Congregation Beth Shalom in Modesto.
Part outreach and part fundraiser, the event from 9 a.m to 3 p.m. will include live music and vendors selling everything from Jewish art to jewelry to plants to ceramics.
Youths from the congregation will demonstrate Israeli folk dances, and there will be tours of the synagogue, plus – new this year – an “Ask the Rabbi” booth with CBS’ new part-time rabbi, Shalom Bochner. Ticket prices include a brunch featuring a bagel with cream cheese and smoked salmon, a blintz, some kugel (sweet noodle pudding) and fruit, plus coffee or orange juice.
This year’s event also will feature a kids’ play area with a bounce house and other activities, a raffle, silent auction “and our world-famous bake shop,” said CBS member Joyce Gandelman. “It’s an opportunity to get some Jewish food at a reasonable price. If people have never tasted kugels or blintzes before, it’s an opportunity to do that. It’s also an opportunity to buy some authentic, homemade baked goods. These are recipes that have been handed down from generation to generation. We’ll have modern things, as well, such as brownies.”
Cafe Shalom tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door, or $8 for children through age 10. Proceeds will go toward education and activities for the congregation’s children and youths.
Congregation Beth Shalom is at 1705 Sherwood Ave., Modesto. For more information, call (209) 571-6060.
