25 YEARS AGO: Tuolumne County experienced a bark beetle epidemic, killing millions of drought-weakened trees throughout California. The Stanislaus National Forest, near the center of the infestation, lost thousands of ponderosa pines. The infestation was expected to worsen in the summer months if there weren’t high enough temperatures to kill the beetles.
