A fire in the Shackelford neighborhood, northeast of Crows Landing and Hatch roads, Wednesday night popped and crackled and sparked, drawing nearby residents from their home to watch as fires crews battled the blaze.

Multiple people called to report the fire in two outbuildings behind homes in the 400 block of El Paso Avenue at about 7:15 p.m. (Click here to see video)

Some reported hearing the sounds of an explosion, but Modesto Regional Fire Authority Fire Chief Randall Bradley said it was too early to know how the fire started.

He said the fireworks-like sounds people heard might have been a result of downed power lines, which temporarily prevented firefighters from getting to the blaze.

The outbuildings were destroyed but the homes in front were not damaged.

One was vacant and the other, which was occupied, was expected to be habitable Wednesday night, Bradley said.

No one was injured in the fire; the cause is under investigation.
