Power is out, and his been since 9 a.m., at several businesses and at least two apartment complexes in the area of Coffee Road and Celeste Drive.
Modesto Irrigation District spokeswoman Melissa Williams said it should be restored by 7:30 p.m. She said workers are trying to fix a bad underground cable but could not confirm what a resident of the area said were transformers exploding.
“It was like cannons going off,” said Jolynn Wilder, who lives in one of the affected apartment complexes. She heard two loud booms, MID crews showed up, and then she heard two more.
Wilder talked to an MID worker at the scene who she said told her several transformers had exploded. She said the temperature in her apartment was close to 90 degrees late Friday afternoon.
