Modesto's public works director is retiring after more than 30 years with the city. Friday was Dennis Turner's last day at work.

He will be on vacation until his official retirement date of Oct. 10. Turner, 54, has worked for Modesto since 1981.

He was named interim public works director in November 2009 and was promoted to public works director in November 2010.

City Manager Greg Nyhoff said he expects to name an interim director next week.
