A driver died Wednesday evening west of Sonora after his car spun-out and crashed into a tree before rolling over, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The single-vehicle crash occurred about 7:15 p.m. on Highway 49. The gray two-door convertible was heading north on the highway, just south of Fraguero Road.
The CHP said the car was moving at an unsafe speed for the winding road, so the driver lost control of the car.
The car spun in a clockwise manner, before it went off the road and struck the tree.
The car then rolled onto its top and came to rest in the road.
The CHP said the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The CHP did not release the name, age or city of residence of the driver pending family notification.
