Turlock's police chief is out on extended medical leave.

Capt. Steve Williams is serving as acting police chief while Rob Jackson is on leave, officer Mayra Lewis said.

City Manager Roy Wasden said Jackson started his leave about three weeks ago and is expected to be out until summer.

Reached by text message, Jackson, 45, said he didn't want to elaborate on his condition. "I am comfortable saying that a full recovery is expected and I plan to return to work sometime in June or as late as July."

The city hired Jackson as chief in January 2012. He had served as captain for the Turlock department after nearly 20 years with the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department.

In 2010, Jackson ran for election against incumbent Sheriff Adam Christianson, losing by roughly 6,000 votes.

He said at the time of his promotion to chief that the job gave him the opportunity to finish his career in Turlock, where he signed a five-year contract with the city.

Since he took over, he has presided over a department that has had to cut vacant positions in the face of budget cuts but retained a recent overall downward trend in crime.

He has cited concerns about the accuracy of crime-reporting statistics and an increase in violent crime reports, pledging earlier this year to have his officers more visible in the community.
