In April 2012, sheriff's deputy Bob Paris and locksmith Glendon Engert were shot to death in Modesto while serving an eviction. In September, California Highway Patrol officer Kenyon Youngstrom was fatally shot by a driver during a traffic stop on Interstate 680 near Alamo.
Retired Modesto Police Chief Mike Harden was the keynote speaker Wednesday morning, while new Chief Galen Carroll read names of fallen officers.
"I was impressed by the effort that is put into the memorial service, as well as the overall turnout of the area police departments," Carroll said. "The event was a good tribute to those officers that have fallen in the line of duty and is a reminder to all of us of the sacrifice made by the families of those officers."
