A man died and two others suffered major injuries Monday morning when the truck in which they were traveling became airborne, crashed into an irrigation ditch and caught fire near Los Banos.
Joshua Burke, 21, of Garden Grove was driving west on Highway 152 east of Los Banos with two passengers on the front bench seat of a GMC utility truck when the incident occurred about 7 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol officer Matt Pinheiro.
The men were pinned in the truck when a fire started in its engine compartment. Passers-by stopped to help and fire crews arrived shortly after to extinguish the flames. Burke and the right seat passenger, 21-year-old Eric Rodriguez of Long Beach, suffered major injuries from the crash and the fire.
Burke was taken to a hospital in Fresno, and Rodriguez was taken to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. The passenger in the middle seat, a 35-year-old man from Murrieta, died at the scene. His name was withheld by authorities until his family could be notified.
