Body found along Highway 99 in Merced

An unidentified man’s body was found lying in the center divider of south highway 99, south of Yosemite Parkway, this morning, according to the California Highway Patrol in Merced.
The man was dead when officers arrived on the scene around 10:30 a.m. Friday, according to officer Jason Schoonhoven. Officers believe the man was a victim of a hit-and-run accident that may have occurred sometime between 3 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Friday morning.
The car fled the scene after fatally striking the man, Schoonhoven said. The incident is still under investigation, and officers are asking for the public’s help in identifying the vehicle, he added.
Schoonhoven said an autopsy is scheduled early next week to identify the man and to determine the approximate time of his death.
