Motorcyclist injured in Modesto crash

A motorcyclist was injured late Sunday afternoon in Modesto after he crashed trying to avoid a truck on Kansas Avenue, authorities said.

At about 4:30 p.m., the motorcyclist was heading west on Kansas when a truck in front of him began turning into the Foster Farms plant.

The truck initially swung left to make a wide right turn into the business, according to Battalion Chief Cecil Ridge of the Modesto Regional Fire Authority.

Ridge said the motorcyclist, thinking the truck was turning left, tried to pass on the right. When the truck turned to the right, the motorcyclist veered right to avoid the truck and hit a couple of bollards, or steel posts.

The motorcyclist was thrown 20 to 30 yards, Ridge said. He was taken to a nearby hospital and treated for leg and other injuries.

The motorcycle caught fire, which was extinguished by a passer-by, Ridge said.
