A 63-year-old man was seriously injured Saturday night when he was struck by a car while walking along a rural road just north of Modesto, the California Highway Patrol reported Monday.
Richard Beever of Modesto suffered major injuries and was hospitalized at University of California Medical Center in Sacramento.
The incident occurred about 8:20 p.m. on Coffee Road just north of Claratina Avenue.
The CHP said the weather was cloudy and conditions were damp. Oscar Rosales, 19, of Modesto was driving a 2003 Volvo south on Coffee Road north of Claratina Avenue about 45 mph. Beever was walking north on the west shoulder of Coffee pushing a bicycle.
The CHP said Rosales was inattentive to his driving and allowed the Volvo to drift onto the west shoulder of the road. The car's front end hit Beever and the bicycle. Rosales was not injured.
Beever initially was taken by ambulance to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto and later transferred to the Sacramento hospital. The CHP said alcohol or drugs did not appear to have been a factor in the incident, which remains under investigation.
