Modesto police on Monday said a shooting at a west Modesto market had nothing to do with the market, but was likely gang-related.
The 19-year-old man who was shot Saturday night remains in critical condition, said Lt. Rick Armendariz.
The shooting happened at Alex and Sons Market in the 500 block of North Martin Luther King Drive, between Vine and Spruce streets. Officers found the victim inside the store but don't know if he was shot there or outside.
He was initially uncooperative with officers, telling them he "fell off a bike," Armendariz said.
A man in his 40s who police initially reported suffered a heart attack during the shooting actually was grazed by a bullet. He was treated for his injuries and has been released from the hospital.
Armendariz said detectives want to talk to multiple people who were at the store during the shooting but left before officers arrived.
