When Hughson City Councilman Matt Beekman is sworn in as mayor next month, the two remaining years on his council seat will be up for grabs.

Beekman ran unopposed for the seat of retiring Mayor Roman Bawanan.

The council voted Monday night to fill that vacancy with an appointment, rather than a special election.

Hughson residents who are interested in applying can do so at City Hall located at 7018 Pine St. The city will accept applications now through 5 p.m. Jan. 14.

After the closing of the application period, the City Council will interview every candidate during a meeting at a yet to be determined date. Councilman Jeramy Young said if a large number of people apply, the council could scheduled a special meeting to make time for all the interviews.
