Free lecture in Modesto tonight on campaign coverage

University of the Pacific political science professor Keith W. Smith will speak tonight in Modesto on the presidential election and whether the media has advanced or hindered voters’ ability to make informed decisions.
The free lecture is part of the American Heritage Scholarship Series, which continues with an essay contest for Stanislaus County high school juniors and seniors.
The lecture begins at 7 p.m. in the Martin G. Petersen Event Center, 720 12th St. The public is invited, although students will be given priority to ask questions.
Information about the essay contest and applications are available from high school counselors and from the county Office of Education at (209) 238-1706 or online, www.stancoe.org/scoe/admin/american_heritage/index.html. The deadline to submit essays is Oct. 26.
