A fire that apparently started in a laundry room left a Turlock duplex damaged and six people displaced, authorities said.
According to the Turlock Fire Department, the fire broke out Tuesday about 1:45 p.m. at the duplex in the 100 block of Angelus Street.
One person was home and sleeping; a smoke alarm awakened the occupant and he or she escaped through a back window.
Firefighters found heavy smoke and flames in the kitchen and master bedroom area; they contained the fire within 10 minutes.

Cause of the fire was under investigation; damages were estimated at $40,000.
The American Red Cross came to help the three adults and three children displaced by the fire.
