A 23-year-old man received serious burns in an industrial accident Monday at a tomato packing plant, the Merced County Sheriff's Department reported.
The incident was reported around 4:30 a.m. in the 12000 block of Ingomar Grade near Santa Nella. The worker was struck by tomato paste from a valve that wasn't bled properly, according to Deputy Tom MacKenzie, sheriff's spokesman.
He was flown to a regional burn center and treated for second and possibly third degree burns to his face. The Division of Occupational Safety and Health has been notified and will conduct their own investigation.
No one else was injured during the incident.
