Merced police revealed Monday they've arrested 41-year-old Rudy Romero for allegedly killing his wife, 44-year-old elementary school teacher Diane Romero.
Police haven't gone into specifics about the motive, saying only that it appears to be a domestic dispute that ended with her killing.
"As we gather more facts in this investigation (the motive) will become clearer," said Lt. Andre Matthews, police spokesman.
Diane Romero was found with stab wounds early Thursday morning in the pool of her backyard. Rudy Romero also suffered stab wounds and was hospitalized in critical condition. Police responded to the scene after receiving a 6:10 a.m. call from an unidentified person.
When asked about Rudy Romero's injuries, Matthews replied "we're not sure whether they're self-inflicted or he got them by some other means."
The victim was a third-grade teacher at Peterson Elementary School in Merced for 13 years.
A bus driver for the Merced Union High School District, Rudy Romero remains in the hospital while he recovers from his injuries. He's under 24-hour guard pending transfer to the Merced County Jail. Police spoke with him in the hospital Saturday and he was subsequently placed under arrest.
Police said the couple's sons are with family members.
