As many as 60 downtown businesses were evacuated this afternoon because of a gas leak at a construction site.
Pacific Gas & Electric Co. workers were able to cap off a two-inch gas line to stop the leak and businesses in downtown Newman reopened at 4:10 p.m.
Authorities evacuated homes and businesses along Main Street and Highway 33 between Fresno and Kern streets, City Manager Michael Holland said.
From 50 to 60 businesses and 12 to 18 apartments and homes were evacuated starting about 2 p.m. today.
Construction workers doing excavation work at the city’s new downtown plaza at Highway 33 and Tulare Street ruptured the 2-inch line, Holland said.
Authorities detoured motorists around the closed stretch of Highway 33 while the evacuated section of Main Street was closed to traffic.
Holland said there were no injuries or fires.
