DEMS EXTEND STANISLAUS LEAD: Democrats are extending their registration lead over Republicans in Stanislaus County, according to new figures from the county's Registrar of Voters office. As of May 14, there were 90,003 registered Democrats, to 85,998 registered Republicans. Less than two months ago, the state Democratic Party announced that Stanislaus County had "gone blue," or had a majority of registered Democrats, for the first time since 2001. On March 22, there were 87,709 registered Democrats and 86,702 Republicans in the county. Democratic party activists have attributed their party's registration boost to a surge of interest in the presidential primary race and strong local registration drives. The number of decline-to-state voters has also increased in the last few months, from 31,225 in March to 32,314 on May 14.
