A 29-year-old man was in a Modesto hospital after he was stabbed in the back during a fight -- with his own brothers, authorities said.
Merced County Sheriff's Department deputies arrested brothers Santos and Salvador Toro, ages 21 and 23, respectively, in Ballico on Monday, according to Tom MacKenzie, sheriff's spokesman.
MacKenzie said investigators are withholding the name of the 29-year-old victim, who is the older brother of the two suspects.
Sheriff's deputies received a call about a stabbing in the 11000 block of West Gregg Street in Ballico about 11:50 p.m. Saturday.
Details on the incident are sketchy because those involved have not cooperated with investigators, MacKenzie said.
MacKenzie said Santos and Salvador Toro were walking home from a party and had gotten into a fight with their 17-year-old nephew.
The victim then tried to break up the fight, MacKenzie said, but ended up fighting with Salavador Toro.
Authorities believe that during the fight, Santos Toro came up behind the victim and stabbed him three times. The victim received stab wounds in right side of his back and near his spine. He also had a punctured liver, MacKenzie said.
Both suspects were booked into Merced County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. They remain there on $50,000 bail.
