PASSERS-BY STOP SUSPECT: A man suspected of driving under the influence hit six parked cars on two Modesto streets Monday before being stopped by two people, pulled out of his Jeep Cherokee and held on the ground until police arrived, police said. They arrested 31-year-old Arturo Quilizapa on suspicion of misdemeanor hit-and-run and driving under the influence, Modesto police Lt. Mike Perine said. He said police received the first call about 4:15 p.m., when someone reported that the green Jeep Cherokee had hit two parked cars on Celeste Drive; soon after, they received reports that the Jeep hit four parked cars on Lancey Drive. Nobody was hurt. Perine said police found a bottle of tequila in the Jeep, and it was three-quarters empty.
SEARCH ON FOR IMPAIRED DRIVERS: The Turlock Police Department will try to make Turlock's roads safer by using saturation patrols throughout May to find drivers impaired by drugs and alcohol. Patrols will be conducted in the evening. Drivers suspected of being under the influence will be arrested. The Police Department received a Selective Traffic Enforcement Program grant aimed at saving lives and reducing collisions and to educate the public on drinking and driving, to arrest those who drive impaired and to target drivers with suspended or revoked licenses. Funding was provided by a $476,554 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
