75 YEARS AGO: A contract for building a dam in the Tuolumne River to create Lake Modesto was entered into between the city of Modesto and the Knapp Construction company. The city hoped to rush the work with the idea of having the lake available for summer use.
50 YEARS AGO: More than 2,000 spectators visited the West Coast's first antique aircraft show, which was held at the Merced Municipal Airport. The show drew 30 pre-World War II and nearly 200 modern planes. Officials of the Antique Aircraft Association and Merced Municipal Airport were discussing plans to make the show an annual affair.
25 YEARS AGO: The city of Riverbank raised its water rates for the first time since 1971. The increase in the water rate would cost an average of just under $8 per year for each of the city's 1,900 customers.
