Word came from Sacramento on Thursday that Modesto native Elizabeth "Liz" Hill was retiring. That dredged up memories for Judy Sly, who edits our opinions pages.
"Some things remind you of your age," Sly writes on the Bee Opinion Blog. "The announcement of Liz Hill's retirement as California legislative analyst is an old-age sign for me.
"I wrote a story about Liz back in 1976, when she was a Fulbright Scholar studying transportation in Sweden and I was a fairly new reporter here at The Bee. I dug out the article today and several things struck me.
"First, Liz complained about the high prices in Sweden -- $1.50 a gallon for gas. And yet people were still using their cars instead of taking public transit at a flat cost of $15 per month.
Never miss a local story.
"Second, she looked a whole lot younger in that photo, with brown hair to her shoulders.
"Finally, what I recall is that she was so smart and organized. We weren't/aren't much different in age, but she had degrees from Stanford and UC Berkeley and knew so much. People in the community suggested she would do well when she returned to the U.S. Obviously she did."
