INCUMBENT WILL NOT SEEK RE-ELECTION: Merced County Supervisor Kathleen Crookham announced she won't seek re-election in June. A retired teacher and school principal, Crookham was elected to the Board of Supervisors in 1996 and re-elected in 2000 and 2004. "I think it's just the right time to go," she said Thursday. "... I think it's been a successful 12 years. I know I haven't pleased everyone with every decision I've made, but I've worked hard and I'm proud of my record." Crookham's decision clears the way for a host of potential candidates who've expressed interest in representing the county's 2nd District, which includes the city of Merced. One candidate has formally announced a bid, former Merced Mayor Hub Walsh.
