SONORA -- Police arrested two people after a Wednesday afternoon attack of a Sonora man, who was head-butted in the face and kicked several times in the head as he lay on the ground.
Officers arrested Mark Blodgett, 24, and Andrea Corder, 29, both of Sonora.
Blodgett was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and assault with great bodily injury, according to Sonora police. Corder was arrested on suspicion of public intoxication and had four misdemeanor warrants for probation and narcotics violations.
At 4:10 p.m., officers responded to the 500 block of South Stewart Street to a report of an attacked man lying on the sidewalk unconscious, said Lt. Mark Stinson, a Sonora police spokesman.
Never miss a local story.
Officers found Brenden Chriss, 47 of Sonora, lying on the sidewalk, bleeding from injuries to his face.
Chriss was taken by ambulance to Sonora Regional Medical Center, where he was treated for a broken nose, fractures to his face, hemorrhaging inside his skull and a laceration on his bottom lip, Stinson said.
Witnesses told police they saw Chriss talking with Blodgett and Corder, when Blodgett head-butted Chriss "for no apparent reason," Stinson said.
When Chriss fell to the ground, Blodgett kicked Chriss in the head before running away with Corder, Stinson said.
Officers found Blodgett and Corder a few blocks south of the scene on Restano Way, after a witness to the attack spotted the pair near a sandwich shop.
Blodgett and Corder were taken into custody without further incident, and Stinson said the motive for the attack had not been determined.
