Air officials want us to leave cars behind
San Joaquin Valley air officials want residents to make a lifestyle change next summer by getting out of their cars and into the fight against smog. They want residents to take the bus, car pool, ride bicycles, walk and otherwise get by without cars as often as possible.
25 YEARS AGO: The state Employment Development Department said the jobless rate in Stanislaus County in September dropped to 13.2 percent from the August rate of 15 percent. Experts had feared that tomato harvest problems caused by rain, and early cannery shutdowns, could leave the September rate at or near the August level.
