MANTECA -- Downtown will turn into an artists' workshop this weekend during the California Public Art & Mural Symposium.
The biannual event starts Thursday and runs through Sunday. The public is invited to a 6 p.m. welcome reception Thursday at Big League Dreams sta- dium and a wine stroll from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at European Yosemite Cafe, 216 W. Yosemite Ave.
From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, metal sculptor Rick Hartner is scheduled to create a surprise piece in front of spectators in the Bedquarters parking lot at the southwest corner of Yo- semite and Main Street.
Starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, other artists plan to use cans of food to create a sculpture, which later will be donated to a food bank. Spectators can bring cans to be donated in addition to those in the sculpture. And, in a separate activity, eight artists from across the country will participate in a showdown while painting a mural.
Sunday, the public will be invited to join in and help paint a community mural at Sycamore and Yosemite avenues under the direction of artist Art Mortimer. The effort is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. and finish by 4 p.m., followed by a 5 p.m. dedication.
