Tickets availablefor 50 Plus dinner
The 50 Plus Club of Stanislaus County will have its annual dinner meeting Saturday at the SOS Club, 819 Sunset Ave. The club is open to all residents of the county who have lived, or whose spouse has lived, in Stanislaus County for at least 50 years. A social hour and mixer will begin at 5 p.m., with dinner at 7. The meeting will be chaired by President Peter Johansen and will honor 80 years of professional baseball in Modesto. Tickets are $20 and are available by calling Alta Robbins at 578-1524 or Carol Streeter at 578-0325.

75 YEARS AGO: Norman Spires, a 19-year-old from Escalon, walked 40 miles after becoming lost while deer hunting in the Sierra. Spires rested at an abandoned lumber camp to allow his blistered feet to heal before starting a six-mile hike to Hull's Meadow, the closest point an automobile could reach.
50 YEARS AGO: McHenry Village Shopping Center celebrated its fourth anniversary advertising itself as Stanislaus County's only complete shopping center. It was built on property that was 33 acres of grass just five years prior. The site was developed into a wide variety of stores and services complete with meter-free parking for more than 2,000 vehicles.
