This week, we are talking jobs. Though the situation is better than it was, there is still plenty of room for improvement, particularly in the Northern San Joaquin Valley.
As my colleague Marijke Rowland reported, unemployment in Stanislaus County ticked up to 13.3 percent in January, up from 12 percent in January. Though that’s still a move in the right direction, given that the year-ago figure was 15.3 percent, I think everyone can agree there are still far too many people out of work.
This is one reason I was glad to hear about some opportunities for potential employees and employers to interact, coming up soon in the area.
First up, communications giant AT&T is looking to hire 19 people in Modesto. According to an email that came into the office this week, positions include network technicians, retail consultants and customer service representatives. For those who qualify, paid job training is available.
“As a leader in communications technology, AT&T is innovating and investing across California to make sure our customers continue to have the best products and services available,” AT&T said in the news release.
Online applications are accepted at http://att.jobs.
Next, Modesto Junior College is on the hunt for area employers to take part in a spring job fair this week.
Employers who have job openings are invited to participate in the fair, set from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday in the east campus Student Center, 435 College Ave., Modesto.
MJC has these fairs twice a year to provide area employers the chance to meet, recruit and hire students and graduates. The event is free to equal opportunity employers with current openings for full- or part-time hourly or salary based employment opportunities.
Representatives said they don’t accept employers who have jobs based on commission.
For more information or to register, contact the MJC Career Development and Transfer Center at (209) 575-6698 or email@example.com. The college also invited employers who are unable to attend but have employment opportunities they would like to advertise for MJC students; call the Career Center or go online to www.mjc.edu/employers.
Finally, have you ever thought about being a teacher? Coming from a family of them, I certainly considered it at one point.
If it sounds like something you might be interested in, there’s a Teacher Recruitment Fair scheduled next month in Stockton. According to the San Joaquin County Office of Education, area K-12 districts will be on hand to discuss their teaching positions available. And Teachers College of San Joaquin will also be on hand to answer questions and talk about the programs they have available.
The fair will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. April 5 at Nelson Education Center, 2901 Arch-Airport Road.
Attendees can preregister online at http://formbuilder.sjcoe.org/form.aspx?f=341. Organizers suggest people arrive at the fair with the following in hand: a letter of interest, résumé, three professional letters of recommendation, teaching credential (if you have one) and transcripts. For more information, call Shawn Chavez at (209) 468-5952.
