Downward dog meets upward baby each week during Mommy & Me Yoga at Village Yoga Center in Modesto.
The current class has been going on for about a month. The focus is for mothers to become more relaxed and bond with their infants, for babies to interact with one another and for moms to work off their post-pregnancy weight. The class has been offered before and has drawn as many as 19 moms and their little partners.
The yoga workout is led by Katy Merrill, who brings her baby, 7-month-old Carter, to class. Beth Simile was attending class this week with her 5-month-old daughter, Anneliese. When she was pregnant with Anneliese, Simile – a mother of four – took a back-care yoga class at the center and credits it with making Anneliese’s birth her easiest one. Other class participants Thursday included Kristi Victorino with 4-month-old twins Cali and Kelci (with grandmother Nancy Payne standing by to hold one baby or the other), and Mary Su with her daughter Maggie, 5 months.
The Village Yoga Center, which has been around for 14 years, is in good shape itself. This spring, it will grow from 2,000 to 6,000 square feet by relocating from its McHenry Village spot to a bigger space near Keller’s gift store.
