Payless ShoeSource plans to close two of its two stores in Modesto, along with Merced and Sonora locations, as part of its bankruptcy filing.
They are among 408 stores nationwide that the chain seeks to close in a recent bankruptcy court petition, the Fresno Bee reported. Some could stay open depending on negotiations with landlords.
An initial closure announcement in April included the stores on Hatch Road in Ceres and in the Los Banos Creek Shopping Center. The latest petition includes stores on Sisk Road and Oakdale Road in Modesto, on West Olive Avenue in Merced, and on Sanguinetti Road in Sonora.
Several other Payless ShoeSource stores would remain in the Northern San Joaquin Valley if the closings are approved.
