Firefighters tore the garage door from a home in the 1900 block of College Avenue to quickly knock down a fire that had started in the garage and had begun to move up into the attic.
Two residents were inside the home but got out safely. They were being checked at the scene by an ambulance crew and were expected to be fine.
Crews were dispatched to the structure fire about 7:50 a.m. after neighbors or passers-by reported smoke coming from the roof. The garage of the home is along an alley, so firefighters took hoses through the side yard. The residence is south of Monte Cristo Avenue.
Modesto Fire Department Capt. Ed Bartley said the cause of the small fire was not apparent but that the blaze looked to have been accidental.

College Avenue was blocked to traffic for about half an hour.
