50 YEARS AGO: It was announced that the Modesto City Council granted the authority for the creation of the Modesto Beautification Committee. The council also sought to fix the issues of junk cars in the city. Planning Commissioner George Gagos backed up the committee plan along with a plan presented by the Modesto Men for Civic Betterment for the junk car ordinance. The beautification committee was to focus on finding a theme for the city and coordinating construction in an advisory capacity.
