40 YEARS AGO: It was announced that the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors, by unanimous vote, had barred the United Nations flag from flying over any county building during United Nations Week. In the same meeting, the supervisors also voted unanimously to adopt a resolution proposed by a member of the John Birch Society, John Katz, to proclaim Oct. 24 as United States Day. The 24th was the day the U.N. charter was signed. The votes were in response to the fact that whenever the U.N. flag flew, protestors would assemble, which happened when the flag flew at the Modesto branch of the Stanislaus County Library.
