Work is under way to give a Modesto ballpark a major face-lift. The city of Modesto on Friday announced a partnership with the San Francisco Giants Community Fund and Good Tidings Foundation to renovate the field at Enslen Park.
Renovation work began May 6 and is expected to wrap up by the end of the month. City officials said in a news release that work on the Little League-size field includes the demolition of the existing dirt infield and turf outfield, irrigation system, home plate and pitchers mound. Home plate is being relocated in order to accommodate a 200-foot outfield 'fence' so that younger players will now be able to play on both diamonds at Enslen Park simultaneously.
Other improvements include a grass infield, improved irrigation, relocated drinking fountain, improved backstop and a concrete pathway that will provide accessibility from Morris Avenue to the new stands. Workers will replace turf in the outfield and the regrade and level the entire ball field.
The rest of Enslen Park is getting some work, as well. The site will be overseeded with grass seed and then a layer of organic material, removed from the existing ball field, will be applied.
