Gas prices climbing again in Modesto

The bad news is gasoline prices are on the rise again. The good news, if you can consider it that, is that it’s cheaper than it was at this time last year.

The bad news is gasoline prices are on the rise again.

The good news, if you can consider it that, is that it's cheaper than it was at this time last year.

According to AAA, the price of regular unleaded in the Modesto area averaged $3.98 per gallon Friday, up nearly a penny from Thursday and 6 cents from a week ago.

Website modestogasprices.com lists a few stations in the area where regular unleaded can be had for $3.79 a gallon.

Gas prices always creep up this time of year, as stations make the switch to the more expensive summer blend required in California and consumption goes up as summer travel gets under way.

But a year ago at this time, Modesto-area residents were paying $4.29, according to AAA. Hopefully this year isn't a repeat of last year — by October, prices hit an average of $4.63 a gallon, the highest on record for the area.
