The California Highway Patrol is looking for the van driver who hit and critically wounded a man on a bicycle before fleeing the scene in west Modesto on Tuesday afternoon.
Gilbert Bejaran, 39, was riding his bicycle south on Hays Street and the van was driving south, too, said officer Chuck Leon.
When the two reached Donald Street, Bejaran made a right turn in front of the van and was struck.
The driver of the van fled the scene and last was seen heading west on John Street, Leon said.
The van is described as white with gray trim, possibly a Dodge Caravan or similar model.
It likely would have moderate front-end damage, such as broken headlights and dents.
Bejaran suffered a major compound fracture to his left ankle and had to have a metal rod implanted to avoid amputation, according to his aunt Brenda Velasquez.
He also suffered broken ribs, a broken collarbone and a punctured lung.
Anyone with information is asked to call the CHP at 545-7440 and ask for Officers Chuck Leon or Tom Stewart.
