Brush fire closes part of Highway 33 near Newman

A vegetation fire south of Newman closed a one-mile stretch of Highway 33 on Thursday afternoon. The two-alarm fire that started at about 4:20 p.m. behind an old restaurant and inn.

A vegetation fire south of Newman closed a one-mile stretch of Highway 33 on Thursday afternoon.

The two-alarm fire that started at about 4:20 p.m. behind an old restaurant and inn was fueled by the wind and persisted in the heavy brush for several hours.

A vacant building, formally Marty’s Inn, was threatened but did not sustain any damage, according to fire officials.

During the suppression efforts Highway 33 was closed between Inyo Avenue and Sanchez Road.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
