Eighth-graders Allison Behrens of Turlock Junior High and Caydin Sablan of Salida Middle School spelled their way to glory at the Junior High Spelling Championship, surviving challenges like plenipotentiary, hibernaculum and abhorrence.
Wednesday’s event was sponsored by the Stanislaus County Office of Education. Spelling master Harry Bakker, a retired educator, and 25 volunteer proctors led the event.
Some 45 students from 25 schools participated.
Allison and Caydin will represent Stanislaus County at the state championship in San Rafael in May. Eighth-grader Mira Patel of Salida Middle will serve as an alternate.
