A 75-year-old man who took off in his airplane from a private airstrip near Grayson on Friday never made it to his destination, the Columbia Airport.
Family reported LeRoy Del Don missing both in Stanislaus and Tuolumne counties, said Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jon McQueary.
Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Sgt. Andrea Benson said her office was contacted early Saturday morning by a captain with the “Air Force rescue” who said they were able to follow Del Don’s flight path into Calaveras County and then lost track of it in a mountainous region. The plane, a 1967 Beechcraft Baron, appeared to have been descending, she said.
Tuolumne County’s search and rescue team was sent to Calaveras County to assist authorities there with the search for Del Don and his plane.
